Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
